Nodus partnered with GOTO Design to design and build a featured segment of Glade’s Pop-Up in the Meatpacking District of New York City. The environment provided a multi-sensory, immersive and interactive experience for shoppers – inspired by and infused with fragrance.

Nodus was tasked with fabrication and installation of the feature wall, comprised of 1600 candles organized into an abstract portrait as an overall composition. The wall itself was a double compound curve, bending both in plan and section.

For the accelerated schedule and tight deadline of the pop-up, Nodus developed a wall structure integrating a friction-fit candle holding strategy allowing each candle to be set into place by hand pressure. Each row of candles changed direction, with the oval-shaped openings in the wall correctly orienting each individual candle.

The lobby reception wall at the B Ocean Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, was inspired by blades of seaweed moving in the ocean. The hotel has a storied history with the “Mermaid Show” featured at the lobby bar, visible from the upstairs pool.

The surface was developed, by Nodus, to allow panel seams to follow the contours of the tiled pattern and ensure that wood-to-wood seams would be concealed in the final installation, giving the entire wall a seamless appearance. These final appearance considerations required custom CNC cut butcher-block slabs for each of the 21 tiles composing the full surface.

For the Dwana Smallwood Performing Arts Center, situated between the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant, Nodus collaborated with architects at JPDA to develop a surface relief for the façade and interior that echoes the rhythmic quality of a dance gesture rippling out and impacting its surroundings.

In the interior reception area, Nodus milled solid fiberboard panels that were tightly coordinated with the surrounding millwork for seamless integration. On the exterior façade, custom-cast, glass fiber-reinforced concrete panels provide graphic identity for the dance center, ensuring continuity between exterior and interior spaces.

For the interior panels, Nodus prepared digital fabrication models and surface-milled CNC cut files. For the exterior panels, concrete forms were developed through an analogous but very digitally minded design development process. that were then casted by hand.

Designed by Justin Jiang, Nodus provided all the parametric and digital fabrication design development work to bring this concept to life. The design features dynamic topographic surfaces that allow for flexible product positioning.

Inspired by the star from our logo, the figure is stretched and projected into triangulated forms, creating two massings that rise from the ground and meet at an apex. These "stars" frame a rotated square, with a central depression serving as both a passageway and a shoppable niche lined with mirrors. The triangulated surfaces are crafted from CNC-cut redimats, providing grip for products while echoing textures commonly found in urban streetscapes. This design exemplifies our expertise in parametric design, precision CNC fabrication, and exceptional craftsmanship.

For the release of the Sell on Etsy smartphone app, the online marketplace asked Nodus to fabricate packaging for its custom credit card reader, totalling 26,000 units at tight tolerance (0.005”).

All parts are batch milled with checks every 150 units to ensure quality control over production run. Slot for business card is cut with custom 1/32” table saw blade, then each piece is hand sanded and packaged.

For two Michelin star chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud, Nodus was contracted by GOTO Design to fabricate two plates - titled Buerre and P4. Beurre features Truffle Butter, a signature of restaurant Daniel, while the P4 dish features various sweets depending on season and menu.

From design sketches, Nodus interpreted and developed fabrication-ready models. The dishes are two-sided milled Corian, hand-sanded and polished to a soft satin finish.

ICFF STUDIO COMPETITION, USA, JUNE 2015

Inspired by watching drips run off the rim of a paint can, ‘Minun’ is a playful yet dramatic approach to the typical wooden stool.  This piece was designed for and selected as one of the winners of the ICFF Studio competition which gives young designers a platform to show their work.  

Despite its swooping curves, Minun is much easier to manufacture than it appears. Each part is flipped-milled from a single block of wood as well. Nodus developed a working fabrication set of digital files that were then coded to develop the digital fabrication workflow to allow for each part to be made. The post milling process included hand finishing and assembly with the introduction of a polished metal ring to finish the design.

Known for his atmospheric and severe installations, Terence Koh’s work has roots in performance art and mysticism. According to writer Agustín Pérez Rubio, “Koh’s creativity is not about the construction of a character. Rather, it is an act of political or social relevance with an ever-growing collective consciousness.”

In 2014, Koh moved from New York City to an isolated location Upstate in order to immerse himself in Nature. In 2015, the artist built his first bee chapel in the forest on his land, and began a series of collages using beeswax, organic materials and found images, including postcards and stamps from foreign countries and politically charged photographs.

For the exhibition, Koh will transform the gallery into a “Living Garden of Eden,” creating distinct spaces named after the seven days of the week. The floors will be covered with topsoil, and the gallery powered by solar panels, creating an atmospheric space that is tranquil, theatrical and political. Other elements include a living apple tree, beeswax sculptures and collages, a sound recording of two black holes colliding a billion light years away, and the bee chapel itself.

Built as a sanctuary for bees, the chapel will connect to the outside via an acrylic tube, allowing them to pollinate and return.

Rockaway Beach neighborhood icon Thai Rock was virtually demolished by Hurricane Sandy. Over multiple project phases, Nodus is helping restore and improve the restaurant’s outdoor area, including railings and wall art, with facade elements and custom furnishing on the second floor in future phases.

Nodus designed and fabricated several new features for the formerly underused deck area, replacing a dated and sun-bleached mural with a custom contoured relief of a reclining Buddha spanning 30'. Nodus also developed and fabricated the custom railings encircling the deck.
